SMA and NPA: what the labels mean

When a repayment is late, the lender puts the account in a category that shows how far behind it is. The labels sound technical, but they are just day counts. Knowing which one applies to you tells you how much time you have and what options are still open.

The stages, by days overdue

StageDays overdueWhat it means
SMA-0Days overdue: Up to 30 daysWhat it means: Early warning. Reminders begin. (Not used for cash-credit / overdraft accounts.)
SMA-1Days overdue: 31 to 60 daysWhat it means: The lender’s follow-up becomes formal.
SMA-2Days overdue: 61 to 90 daysWhat it means: Last stage before NPA. Restructuring is easiest to discuss here.
NPADays overdue: More than 90 daysWhat it means: Non-performing asset. Recovery steps become formal; for secured loans, notices under the SARFAESI Act may follow.

These are RBI’s rules, applied by the lender at the end of each day. For a cash-credit or overdraft account, "overdue" means the balance has stayed above the limit or interest has not been serviced for the period. Ask your lender in writing which category your account is in and from which date.

Why the label matters

The category changes three things: what the lender must do internally, what is reported to the credit bureaus, and which options are open to you. In the SMA stages, a restructuring or a revised schedule is usually easier to discuss. Once an account is NPA, the lender’s recovery process starts and some options narrow — though a settlement or restructuring can still be discussed.

What you can ask your lender for

  • A written statement of dues showing principal, interest and charges, with dates.
  • The current classification and its effective date.
  • The name and contact of the officer handling the account.
  • A written reply to any request you make. Keep every reply.

If the lender does not respond within 30 days or you are unhappy with the reply, complain free to the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in. Use the lender’s own grievance channel first and keep the reference number.

Questions about SMA and NPA

Does SMA mean I have defaulted?

SMA means a payment is overdue. It is a warning stage. The earlier the stage, the more options you usually have.

How does this affect my credit report?

The lender reports repayment behaviour to the bureaus every month. Days-past-due appear on your report, and an NPA appears as a serious default.

Can the classification be reversed?

Only by paying the overdue amount. Once all overdue dues are paid, the account can be upgraded to standard; RBI rules set how.

Can anyone get my account reclassified for a fee?

No. Classification follows the payment position. Anyone offering this is not acting for your lender.

I have received a notice. What should I do?

Read it for the date and the amount claimed, do not ignore it, and consult a qualified lawyer promptly. Do not send it to us.

What is a SARFAESI notice?

A notice a secured lender can issue after an account is NPA, demanding payment within 60 days before it enforces the security. Legal advice is essential at this point.

What should I do first?

Get your statement of dues and classification in writing, put your papers in order, and talk to the lender about what you can realistically pay.
