Your credit score and report, explained

Every loan you take and every instalment you pay builds a record with the credit bureaus. Lenders read that record before they decide. This page explains what is in it, how to get your own copy free, what actually moves the score, and what to do if something is wrong.

Get your own report — free, once a year

Each credit bureau (CIBIL, Experian, Equifax, CRIF High Mark) must give you one full report with score free every calendar year. Ask on the bureau’s own website. Checking your own report does not lower your score. → How to read your credit report

What moves the score

  1. Paying on time — the single biggest factor. One missed EMI stays on the record for years.
  2. How much of your credit limit you use — keeping card balances well below the limit helps.
  3. How often you apply — many applications in a short time count against you.
  4. Length and mix of credit — older accounts and a mix of secured and unsecured loans help.
  5. Being a guarantor — someone else’s default can affect your record.

No one can raise a score on request. It changes only as lenders report your repayment behaviour. → What a credit score is

Found an error? Dispute it yourself, free

Wrong account, wrong amount, a closed loan still showing open: raise a dispute with the bureau online, and write to the lender that reported it. The bureau must respond within a set time. Keep copies of everything. → Correcting credit report errors

For business owners

Lenders read a company’s file the same way, plus: the commercial bureau record of the business, how existing limits have been used, and whether GST and statutory dues are current. Proprietors: your personal score and the business file are read together.

Plan your repayments, do not just react

List every loan and card with its EMI, due date and rate. Pay the ones with penalties and the highest rates first. Set up auto-debit for fixed EMIs. If money is short one month, call the lender before the due date, not after. → Trouble repaying?
