MSME loans
Micro, small and medium enterprises registered as MSMEs can access loans and government-backed schemes designed for them — some without collateral, some with interest support. The bank still lends on the strength of the business; registration opens the door, it does not guarantee a loan.

What lenders usually check
- MSME registration and category (micro, small or medium) — from April 2025 the bands are: micro up to ₹2.5 crore investment and ₹10 crore turnover; small up to ₹25 crore and ₹100 crore; medium up to ₹125 crore and ₹500 crore. Check the current bands on the official MSME registration portal.
- Turnover, profit and GST filings.
- Bank statements and existing loan conduct.
- The purpose: working capital, machinery, expansion.
- Owner’s and business’s credit records.
Documents to keep ready
- MSME registration certificate; GST certificate and returns.
- Owner and business PAN; identity and address proof.
- ITR and financial statements for two or three years.
- Bank statements for six to twelve months.
- A short business profile and, for larger loans, a projected cash-flow sheet.
- Quotations for machinery or equipment, if the loan is for that.
Repayment
Term loans in EMIs; working-capital limits reviewed yearly. Under some schemes, a moratorium at the start is possible.
Interest and charges
Scheme loans may carry capped rates or interest support; standard MSME loans are priced by the bank. Ask which scheme, if any, the bank is applying, and what the guarantee fee is under a credit-guarantee scheme.
Security or own contribution
Government credit-guarantee schemes allow eligible MSME loans up to scheme limits without collateral, with the guarantee fee usually passed to the borrower. Beyond that, collateral and a margin apply.
How to prepare
Keep GST, ITR and bank records consistent. Prepare a business profile and a cash-flow sheet. Ask the bank in writing which schemes your business qualifies for.
